The denial of marriage hurts gay and lesbian families who live in every county of Wisconsin. These loving, committed lesbian and gay couples have taken on the responsibilities of marriage, yet they are denied the hundreds of critical protections that marriage offers. Wisconsin lesbian and gay couples share homes, support each other emotionally and financially, raise children together, and celebrate their commitment in the presence of friends and family. They are doing the work of marriage, yet they are treated as virtual strangers to each other in the eyes of the law.
Visit our online resource "The Fairness Gap" for additional information about the inequality LGBT families face.
In November 2006, Wisconsin voters approved a constitutional amendment that prohibits marriage equality in our state. This means it is impossible for lawmakers or courts to end discrimination in marriage so long as the constitutional amendment is in place. Fair Wisconsin’s objective is to continue to educate the public about the need for marriage equality, while also working to achieve some level of basic protections or recognition of our families (potentially through domestic partnership).
By engaging Wisconsinites in an ongoing conversation about our families, we’ll continue to move public opinion. One day, a majority of Wisconsin voters will vote to repeal the discriminatory amendment. But only if we continue the struggle.Use this site to find out more about the struggle for marriage equality.
